Trinidad and Tobago has been a global leader in infusing Information Technology into its education system for the last four years.
This was reiterated by Minister of Education, Dr. the Honourable Tim Gopeesingh, at the media launch of the 2nd Virtual Educa Caribbean Symposium at the Kapok Hotel today, Friday April 4th, 2014. The government has already distributed over 75,000 laptops to students and over 5,000 to Teachers, Principals and School Supervisors throughout the country since coming into office in 2010, as part of its drive to infuse ICT into the school curriculum.
The 2nd Virtual Educa Caribbean Symposium, hosted by the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with Organisation of American States and Virtual Educa, is a groundbreaking initiative aimed at transforming education and developing methods of encouraging ICT innovation, entrepreneurship, creative thinking, inclusiveness and accessibility for all students in the education system.
Commenting at the media launch of the 2nd Virtual Educa Caribbean Symposium, the Minister noted that the teacher training ICT workshops, conducted by internationally renowned experts, will assist in continuing to close the digital divide in the education system, by equipping teachers with the necessary skills to infuse ICT into the curriculum and enable students to thrive in the highly competitive global environment. Students and teachers will also be able to experience the 21st Century Virtual Classroom in the Virtual Educa Exhibition Area, courtesy our joint Platinum Sponsors Samsung and Blink|bMobile. This is in anticipation of the roll-out of 20 pilot virtual classrooms in primary and secondary schools across the country, in partnership with Samsung. The minister also urged other private sector companies to participate in the 2nd Caribbean Virtual Educa Symposium and Exhibition, calling on business to back education.
The Ministers of Education and other senior education officials from Caricom, as well as Central and Latin American countries have been invited to attend the 2nd, Virtual Educa Caribbean Symposium to be held at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, from May 19th-20th, 2014
